LONG ISLAND WEB DESIGNSBUSINESS WEBSITE DESIGN

Using a Homepage Video without Slowing the Website

Give a decorative hero video a lightweight fallback and keep the page useful before playback begins.

A background video should support the first impression, not delay the information customers came to read. For a Long Island business, relevant local footage can work well when the headline remains clear and the page loads usefully without waiting for the video to start.

Design the Still Frame First

Choose a poster image that works on its own behind the headline and buttons. Check contrast at narrow and wide widths and avoid placing important subjects behind text. Keep essential information in the page rather than inside the footage. If playback is unavailable, the visitor should still understand the business and see the next step.

Limit the Media Cost

Use an appropriately sized, compressed clip and avoid downloading multiple variants unnecessarily. Reserve the visual space so loading does not push other content around. Important opening images should not be delayed in the same way as offscreen media. Treat the video as an enhancement and respect reduced-motion preferences when implementing playback.

Test a Real First Visit

Check the page on a slower connection and a phone, not only over a fast office network. Compare the useful first screen with and without the video. Watch the loop transition and confirm that the contact button remains readable. If the clip adds little value or makes the page feel unstable, a strong still image is a better design decision.

What to Check

  • Make the poster image work independently.
  • Keep text and buttons outside the footage.
  • Limit file size and unnecessary downloads.
  • Test slower connections and reduced motion.
